When the Nokia N95 was released it took the world by storm as it managed to pack pretty much everything the hardened gadgeteer could need into a pocket-friendly device. Since then it’s been joined by other do-it-all phones such as the iPhone 3G and T-mobile G1. The N96 signals the start of Nokia’s fight back as it promises smoother video playback and some other neat extras. But has Nokia done enough to make the N96, which is available for around £500 SIM-free, an attractive upgrade for the owners of the N95?
Positives
Looks-wise, the N96 isn’t a radical departure from previous designs. The handset still has quite a bulky frame, but instead of the matte finish, it comes with an altogether more stylish-looking high-gloss exterior.
The BlackBerry 8820 has been one of the best slab-style QWERTY smartphones for so long now, it’s hard to imagine anything overtaking it. Its combination of ease of use, long battery life and excellent keyboard contributed to a maximum score of 10 out of 10 when we first looked at it last August, and our opinion hasn’t changed much over that time.
But times move on, new handsets are released, and inevitably - eventually - a new champion comes along. That new champion, it would seem, is Nokia’s E71 - the long-awaited successor to the E61. Why? First, this is a simply gorgeous phone. With a solid metal rear, chrome-trimmed front and flat, almost mirror-finish screen, it’s one beautiful piece of design.
World: Say hello to the RIM BlackBerry Bold. *Cue dramatic music.*
You may know it as the RIM BlackBerry 9000, but on Sunday, Research In Motion officially took the wraps off the highly anticipated smartphone, complete with a new name. The “Bold” is in reference to the smartphone’s gorgeous display, but it’s also bold in that it represents a number of new moves for the company. Oh, BlackBerry Bold, how do we love thee? Let us count the ways.
The bold and the beautiful
As we just mentioned, the device gets its name from its screen. The BlackBerry Bold features a half-VGA (480×320 pixel resolution) and a 65,000-color display. During some initial product testing, research group participants repeatedly called the screen “bold” and “brilliant.” The Brilliant moniker didn’t really jibe with the company, thus the BlackBerry Bold was born.
Catch the moment The 1.3 megapixel camera lets you catch the fun as it happens. View your photos onscreen, share them wirelessly via Bluetooth™ or in a picture message.
